Test Shot/Character Design - George

Bruce McCullen, backing guitarist in the band
Make up/Hairstyle
Hair shall be left natural and down, not messy. No make up needed because it would look out of place.

Style/Colours/Textures - Intended Image
Dark jacket, smart shirt and smart trousers. Tie is optional but preferable.

Influences on image/similar style
The look is very similar to the one Miles Kane and his band wear, as seen in the Rearrange music video.

It is also similar to the Beatles.

miles kane nvc sheet for rearrange music video

this is my non verbal communication sheet for the Miles Kane 'Rearrange' music video. this sheet shows how non -verbal communication was used throughout the video, by doing this we were clearly able to see how we would be able to use non verbal communication in our video and how this would effect are video and grades if we didnt put it in.

Drawn storyboard

Here I have drawn a few examples of the shots that will be used in our music video

Step Outline Idea for last chorus -Charlie

Step Outline Idea for Instrumental -Charlie

Non Verbal Communication for last chorus -Charlie

Non Verbal Communication for Instrumental - Charlie

This is my Non Verbal Communication (NVC) grid for one of my sections of the song  which is the instrumental and I've written what the audience will see and how the appearance of the actors will look like and hopefully look and act the way fans of Miles Kane would expect from his own music videos.

Compared to this I have also looked at Miles Kane's video "Inhaler" and picked out the NVC's in his video that his target audience recognize.

Costume: Miles Kane and his band wear similar outfits. These consist of smart shirts, jeans that are normally darek ( yet his are red) smart black shoes and dark flat mullet style or curly hair. This gives off a casual everyday appearance.

Posture: Throughout the video, Miles' posture is quite straight for a man. However, occasionally he does arch over his guitar when playing to show a sign of concentration. Sometimes he is jumping around and having a good time with his band members and once or twice leans over the stage to hold hands and communicate with the audience that are watching.

Facial Expressions: Miles does smile quite a lot within this music video when he is back stage with his band and relaxing in parties which shows he is quite relaxed. When performing, he does emphasis and has a very mouth when singing so he is easily read and fits in perfect with the beat. Sometimes when singing he closes his eyes and squints which shows seriousness yet showing how he is thinking about singing the lyrics and again concentrating.

Gestures: Near the beginning of the performance he points to the audience which is at us due to the P.O.V angle which shows he wants to get the attention of the audience (us). He moves his feet and clicks his fingers and claps his hands throughout the video and either practices or pretends to play the guitar in dressing rooms backstage

Space: There are lots of close ups in the video with him and when he is playing the guitar to emphasis the importance of the use of instruments in his band along with close ups of fans the the instruments. There are also long shots when is is performing to show the interaction with the audience, him in different locations like dressing rooms and parties and mid shots of the band playing with some close ups of them as well.

Voice: Miles has quite a slightly high pitch voice and changes near the ends of verses by lowering his pitch and then it raises when he is singing the chorus along with other singers voices being added on as well.

Non Verbal Communication - George

My NVC song choice for a video already made by Miles Kane was Come Closer due to it having some similarities with our music video and also involves a storyline which his other videos don't.

For our music video i chose the section Ba ba ba da 1 because i decided what would occur in those scenes and i knew what i wanted for it NVC wise.

Post Artist Research - George

Part One - Genre

What elements does your artist use to identify himself in their videos?
Miles is always wearing smart clothing and the camera is mostly focused on him throughout the video, whether he is performing musically or acting.

What genre are they? How do they compare to other artists from their genre (videos)?
Miles Kane is from the indie genre, he is different from a lot of indie artist's videos due to his emphasis on live performance whilst other indie musicians like Foals don't have too much if any performance in their videos.

How has your artist changed over time?
As a solo act Miles Kane is very new and has not changed due to that. However as a musician overall he has changed quite a bit visually from his first band The Rascals due to him now having a smarter dress sense since then.

What generic conventions are evident from their videos?
Indie music focuses on the artists actualy playing their instruments which he does in all of his videos, he also isn't showing off wealth and stuff to keep portraying the normality and everyday nature of the indie genre.

Has the film style changed over time? If so why?
As a solo artist his film style hasn't changed because he hasn't been a solo artist very long. The film style is different to his side project The Last Shadow Puppets though due to it being separate from his solo stuff, therefore emphasising differences between the two.

Miles Kane's first band 'The Rascals'
Part Two - Visual Style and Image

What typical visual elements in the mise-en-scene signify your artist - why?
Most people in his music videos are wearing smart clothing regardless of gender (unless it is a proper live filming such as the Inhaler video where the crowd are wearing whatever they want). The setting is usually in a music venue of some sort with a stage where Miles can perform (Come Closer video). Both of these elements are vital to his image of looking smart and being a live performer so by including them in his videos it maintains that impression of him.
What is your artist's visual image and how is this represented on screen?
Miles' image is that he wears smart clothing and he represents this in his videos by wearing suits and shirts.
How does your artist use camera and editing style and effects to create meaning?
In the videos editing style is used only briefly to make meaningful cuts in the Come Closer video to show a bit of a simple storyline and can be seen as the only proper time where a real editing style is seen. In his other videos all of the shots and cuts are of the band and the audience which highlights his live perfomances. He frequently uses colour filters which could once again be due to live performance and resemble the lights at his shows.
Does your artist's videos relate to other media texts (films, TV programmes etc) why does your artist do this?
Miles Kane's videos don't relate to other media texts in my opinion. I think this is because he wants to establish himself as his own artist, since he is known by many people as being Alex Turner's friend via being the lesser known half of the Last Shadow Puppets.

Chosen Artists - Miles Kane, The Last Shadow Puppets, Arctic Monkeys and The Vaccines

Artist - All artists have had their name on their album cover (Arctic Monkeys have their name on their 1st, 2nd and 3rd albums Whatever People say I am that's what I'm not, Favourite Worst Nightmare and Humbug).
Title -  The Last Shadow Puppets and Arctic Monkeys are the only two chosen artists to have the name of the album on the front cover (Arctic Monkeys only have the name of the album on Favourite Worst Nightmare and their 4th album Suck it and See).
B sides - All acts regularily include B sides on their singles
Institutional Logos - Miles Kane and the Vaccines have Colombia records, Miles Kane has Sony Music, Arctic Monkeys has Domino Records and The Last Shadow Puppets shows no logos yet has Domino Records in small print.
Appropriate Iconography - The Vaccines has a teenage female relating to the subjects of a lot of the songs on their album. The Last Shadow Puppets have a young female on the front of their album which relates to some of the songs on their album. Arctic Monkey's 1st album 'Whatever People say I am thats what I'm not' has a picture of a man smoking which can relate to a lot of the working class stories told in the album, 2nd album 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' has a colourful house which could relate to the song 'This House is a Circus' and the 'Brianstorm' and 'Fluorescent Adolescent' videos from the album; the other 2 album covers for Humbug and Suck it and See don't really have any iconography, no iconography runs through all of their album frontcovers. Miles Kane's iconography is himself.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

The Vaccines - What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?

The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement

Miles Kane - Colour Of The Trap

Kanye West - Summer Homework - George

Part One: Genre
What elements does your artist use to identify themselves in their videos?
Kanye is constantly standing out or the centre of attention in his videos, via him rapping/singing or just being focused on by the camera.
How has your artist changed over time?
He has changed his appearance over time by how he dresses and portrays himself, at the start he wears more ‘gangster’ clothing associated with hip hop whilst now he wears much more stylised, smarter clothing. In his music he has changed from being solely a rap artist to singing more along with using a wide variety of instruments.
What generic conventions are evident from their videos?
Showing off of wealth, popularity, power and black roots as found in most of the hip hop genre.
Has the film style changed over time? If so why?
Previous videos at the start of his career were much more simplistic and could pretty much be done by anyone following him with a camera and with minor special effects. More recent videos have much more style and flair to them to accompany his much changed sound and appearance. Success has probably also brought him bigger budgets for his videos.

Part Two: Visual Style and Image
Kanye’s visual style at the start was very simple and was very in line with other hip hop artists at the time, the mise-en-scene emphasising popularity and wearing the generic clothing associated with the genre as seen in the Through the Wire video from his first album. The locations seen throughout are mostly all black neighbourhoods spread throughout urban areas in the USA, making him seem more down to earth. The video is seen through pictures to Kanye’s life on a board, making him appear as a normal person.
His first single from his latest album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, POWER, maintains the focus on him throughout its running time, also making him appear mythical and god like through having minions, being in the clouds, surrounded by columns and having the video be portrayed in the style of a moving renaissance era painting. The video quite clearly has a large budget to do the effects which are apparent whether they are make up or special effects because both are of high quality.
The stark difference in the two videos is clear and without previous reference or knowledge of Kanye West it would be easy to assume they were from two different artists, main differences are that he portrays himself in different ways but with the same point in mind, previously his popularity was shown through having friends around him, but now he shows his popularity through his ‘god like’ presence.

What typical visual elements in the mise-en-scene signify your artist – why?
A bear is seen on his first 3 albums and in a few of his videos, whether it is a cartoon or as a costume. He also regularly wears iconic items such as his ‘Shutter Shades’ in the Stronger video and the over sized Horus necklace in POWER. He frequently has wealth and extravagance around him such as the Lamborghini in Can’t Tell Me Nothing and the females in Gold Digger.
What is your artist’s visual image and how is this represented on screen?
He is always dressed well and is known for it since he designed shoes for Louis Vutton and released his on clothing line, in his videos this is shown by him wearing sharp, expensive clothing.
How does your artist use camera and editing style and effects to create meaning?
Effects are used in Stronger and POWER to make power more prominent.
Does your artist’s video’s relate to other media texts (films, TV programmes etc) why does your artist do this?
The video for Stronger has lots of connotations to Akira such as the lights on the back of the bikes and storyline. This was done in relation to the sampling of Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger in the song which reflects what happens to Akira. Touch the Sky was clearly a parody based on Evel Knievel’s attempted jump over the Snake River Canyon, since Kanye’s character is called Evel Kanyevel and follows copies the jump. This was probably done because of the repeating lyric, ‘for the day I die, imma touch the sky’. He probably refers these videos to capture a certain style and to make them iconic.
