This is my Ideas Grid for our song "Quick Sand" by Miles Kane. here are some ideas that I have that we could include for our music video.
Narrative: Since there is a mention of a girl wearing a blue sequin dress and the words "tango foxtrot" it gave me the impression of dancing being involved . This gave me the idea of a dance hall being the main setting of the music video and having a boy and girl dancing together. Other settings could include a dressing room/ toilets when the girl is getting ready all lit up. Also, we thought since most of Miles's videos have a high percentage of performance in them, we could place the band within the hall and have shots of the band playing and images of dancing in the hall aswell . We were thinking of possibly having people around the hall sitting to resemble a audience like a competition but we realised the difficulty of trying to get so many people together to make it look realistic ( especially if we had to re-shoot). Instead, we have an idea of the band members holding up scores to mark the dance couple throughout the video. This adds a slight comical side to it as alot of indie videos don't always have a straight forward serious narrative to it so the sudience expect something quirky or funny in the video.
We have a storyline idea for our video. There will be a dancing couple who will be shot dancing around the hall then being marked by the members of the band . However, there is a relationship between the female dancer and our main singer and he doesn't like the fact that she is dancing with another guy. So, when the dancing couple are getting intimate , the main singer will give a low mark to the dance couple as he is slowly getting angry. The female dancer will get annoyed with the main singer and storm off to the dressing room. Her male dancer will encourage her to carry on, so they go back into the dance hall and continue their dance. The band members give them a really high mark and the dance couple hug. By this time the main singer has had enough and storms off exiting the dance hall. The female dance partner shouts at him telling him to come back. She runs after him and there is a mid shot of him walking towards us whilst you see her in the background.
Theme: Since Miles Kane tries to promote himself alot in his videos so there will be a higher percentage of him and his band performaing to the narrative in the video. The dress code for the band members and our main singer will be smart suit wear which Miles Kane is known for. The dance couple will be in flamboiant costumes and ofcourse the girl will be wearing a blue sequin dress for the referencing in the song. The dance hall will also be nicely light with decorations to give it some character.
Representation of instruments: performance is very important for Miles Kane. Realising this, there will be alot of quick short sharp shots of the band members playing their instrument and the main singer singing. We need to make sure that the connection between the music and instruments is perfect so when a guitar is heard a shot will show this. There is also an instrumental near the end of the song so most of that will be shots of the instruments and the singer so there is alot of representation.
Audience expectations: Since Miles Kane is well known for having a indie feel to his music, the audience can expect as said previously alot of shots of the instruments being played and the vocalists singing. Furthermore, alot of indie videos are quite quirky and have some humerous parts in them, this is why we like the idea of the band members marking the dance couple as it is something you wouldn't expect along with not your typical narravtive so it makes it seem more interesting then a boring love story about a boy and a girl.
Tone/ feel of the music: The tone and feel of the music is quite upbeat and quirky hense why we choose to add dancing into it as your quite light on your toes and bouncing around when your dancing around the room. The music is quite heavily based on guitars as there are normally a bassist, a guitarist and Miles Kane playing the guitar also along with the drummer and occasional keyboardist. Having guitars mainly in a song is quite common in indie videos as it's mainly about them playing to their audience and showing them what they can play and how well they can play it. We already have a band in mind that we know who have agreed to play in our music video and our main singer knows how to play the guitar which is a bonus.
