LOCATION CONFIRMATION! - George

Trent Vale have gotten back to me this morning confirming that we can use their hall for the music video. We shall be filming there next wednesday from 6pm onwards. This means we now have over a week to organise instruments, actors and other props for the shoot.

Photoshop CD Cover Tutorial

This video shows different techniques etc. to use on photoshop to make a good album.

Trent Vale Location - George

I have recently contacted Trent Vale Infant School about using their hall for our music video, it has a stage and is very similar to College House's hall so it would be ideal, their Headmistress has said that we should be able to film there next Wednesday (7th December) but is just going to check with the Governors before she fully confirms. She is going to phone tonight about it.

IWEB TUTORIAL

We found this tutorial for Iweb on youtube, which showed us how to use Iweb to create our own layout etc

CD Cover Evaluation - Florence and the Machine

This CD cover got 5/10 due to the simplicity of the cover. It would not take very long to make this due to it only being pictures and text which would not involve much effort because it wasn't edited much. It also has a lack of information e.g. fine print, record labels etc. The inside photo is also ridiculously similar to the front cover showing a lack of variety.

Miles Kane's Website

This is Miles Kane's website, it is good due to its easy to understand format and font whilst making it look very bold and stylistic whilst doing so. It has a distinct colour scheme (Red, black and white) which makes the website nice to look at; it also incorporates videos and images of Miles Kane so it doesnt look boring. Therefore achieving appropriate integration of illustration and text e.g. videos and images. Headlines e.g. 'LATEST NEWS', 'GIGS & EVENTS' etc. are larger than other text to add variety and make sure they stand out to draw attention. There are different links to his Facebook page, record companies and youtube videos, showing that he is keeping up with technology so he can keep in touch and gain more fans.

previous students website - Kate Nash

This website got a 5/10, this is understandable due to the text and layout not being very easy to understand, the format is uneven and has a majority of white space around it, this was done on photoshop. me and george don't think that photoshop would be appropriate  for the website due to the white space being around the edges. it doesn't to look professional or formal enough whilst also taking a lot more effort, this contributes to the fact that it wouldn't fit into Miles Kane's image.

Filming update

After searching around various venues in Nottingham, we have decided to film at college in our theatre and then include some domestic at one of our houses. We feel that by doing this, the story line will be easier to follow and will make more sense. It also means we will have more than one location which will make our video more interesting.
We have asked our actors to bring in their costumes today as we will take photos of them and do some filming to see how the location and the positioning of the actors and equipment appear and whether we need to change the set design to fit in with the location.

Photos from the shoots and the filming will be uploaded later on and the images will be edited and used for our CD cover.

previous students website - The Wombats

this group kept to the conventions of the wombats via there image choices, colour pallette whilst using a clear and easy to read font. it uses appropriate use of i.t.  from the links to social networking sites, email and RRS news feed, they have video links, links to a shop as well as being able to sign up to to there private members list.

Further news on the shed

I have tried to call Julie Lord, the woman in charge of the hall at the Shed many times, along with my group members. She has yet to answer her phone or answer our messages. Because of the lack of response we have decided to rule out the Shed as an option.

Other Locations

On wednesday I went down to the Shed (Beeston and chilwell community centre) to see if we would be able to use the hall they had there. When I got there the woman in charge of renting out the hall wasn't around, and so I was given a number to ring. I plan to ring them during the day.

Previous students website

Before starting our own website, we decided to look at last year's websites, to get an idea of the layout and the technical skills that are required to get into the top band of the mark scheme.

Here are some examples:

This website scored well, getting high marks for the layout, the skills used to create it and the appropriateness to the genre

This website also scored very well with the marking criteria. The background and font style is appropriate to the band and the website was well planned and set out. The images used were effective to the style and the correct use of language.

Here is the marking criteria:

Miles Kane Wordle - George

Our Miles Kane Wordle was taken from an NME album review for Colour of the Trap. Notable words which are large are Alex Turner who he frequently is related to.

Possible re-think of ideas

Since we've not had much luck with getting hold of our preferred locations we have had to re-think a few of our ideas.
We've considered keeping our narrative but changing to another location. These are two school locations, however if these also fall through, we've decided to edit our narrative a little so that we can use a completely different location.

If we end up changing our narrative, we would plan to use the theatre at college and a group member's house. We would use these two locations to show a contrast in relationships between the characters in our music video.

For example, our Female dancer would be dancing in a 'professional' theatre with our Male dancer, and then we'd have a shot of her dancing at home with our Singer.

College House Junior School no longer a location - George

I recently phoned College House to see if they were able to let us use their hall for our music video. They did say we could use the hall however as a group we are not able to use the days they offered due to previous arrangements with jobs etc. Therefore we are once again going to need a new location to use.

Dance Rehearsal - George

We recently got our two dancers James and Sancha to rehearse some dance scenes with the music on so they could get a feel of what they are going to do in the actual film.

not shooting this week

we are unable to shoot are actual music video this week as we still havnt heard back or been able to find a location indoors where we can shoot. we are now considering doing the filming outdoors in a bandstand at a local park.
tomorrow we shall be doing some permininary filming, we have found a space in college we can use to do a rough overview of what are film hopefully should look like and adress any issues we have. we are hoping that alll are cast are able to make it however there maybe a few issues to iron out. at this point it isnt vital as it is just a rough draft
i am also going into my old school on thursday morning, hopefully i should get some information on weather we can use there hall on the wednesaday afternoon.

List of images needed for the CD cover.

Images we will need for our CD cover:

  • A picture of our female dancer, as she is supposed to be the main feature on our digipak.
  • A picture of our 'Miles Kane'
  • A picture of our dancing couple together
  • A picture of the instruments on the stage.
Some examples of images we may want to imitate,

Reply back from Primary school- Charlie

Here is the reply email I got from my primary school talking about the cost and use of their hall:

Since their hire cost is more expensive than Attenborough hall so as a last resort we have to fall back onto our first idea and ask to film there. We have a couple of other that we can film so hopefully we will here from them soon.

Website- compared to the mark scheme- Charlie

After designing the website idea, I looked at the mark scheme for what we would need to do to get a level 4 for our website:

  • Awareness of conventions of layout and page design
- This will be achieved by comparing Miles Kane's website and the websites of the band that he used to be in and see what typical layouts and structures they have and see the quantity of things what we will need to included e.g. the types of photos that are taken of him and the band. How the presentation of news about gigs and important fan information is laid out. Also how the text is arrange on the website that portrays the image and the general feel and look of the website.

  • Awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size
- This can be done similarly by looking at Miles website also his CD cover and looking at the text that is used there. The main style of the text that Miles Kane uses is quite basic and the font is larger for the different categories to catch you eyes then medium font for the rest so it won't be too hard to replicate and find a similar font and size to put onto our website.

  • Accurate use of language and register
-The register and use of language on the website is quite relaxed as it just has text about what you need to know, tour information, information about where to buy his album from and about his mailing list. Again, this shows a relaxed yet simple approach to reaching out to his audience and not being too extravagant and fancy with the appearance. To make it similar, we need to make sure it includes all the vital information about him and information for the fans, but also making the site quite professional but not too much quantity of it.

  • Appropriate use of ICT for the task
- Using ICT won't be too difficult as we can access Photoshop to edit and photos and upload them onto our website that we will take when we are out filming at our locations. We can also use it to edit and change font sizes and the colours used on the website to portray the image of Miles Kane.

  • Appropriate integration of illustration and text
-  Whilst making sure that we have the best quantity and quality of text on the website, there also needs to be a good amount of photos on the website too so it doesn't appear too dull. To do this, when we are out shooting for our music video, we will take still photos with a camera of the cast and the main band and out Miles Kane of course, then after editing them on Photoshop in the mac suite, we can them add some of them to the CD cover and the rest will go on the website showing Chris both on his own and with his band, band members on their own and playing, and images of the two dancers and some of the equipment as well. We may also do some out take photos of the cast having fun and being together.

    Male dancer has changed

Tom who was going to be are male dancer has pulled out. he was unable to film on a wednesday or monday which were going to be our main days for shooting as both me and charlie work all weekend.
are new male dancer is now James. unlike Tom James doesnt dance however he was enthusiastic to learn the steps and be of help and we as a group are happy with the choice we have made.

CD digipak- comparing mark scheme to the work

To achieve a level four for are digipak we need to

    • Use ICT appropriately - we will easily do this by using photopshop appropriately in our cd covers using numerous techniques and special effects to edit both the text and the picture.
    • awareness of conventions of layout and page design- we will do this by following the theme that Miles Kane usually uses on his CD covers.
    • awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size - we will use different size fonts depending on how important the information is. For example, Miles Kane will be in big letters and corporate information will be in smaller lettering.
    • accurate use of language and register- we shall make the language grammatically correct and used appropriately to make it seem professional
    • framing  a shot, using a variety of shot distances as appropriate -  we will make sure the images we use will be framed correctly to make the most out of our cover. we will shoot the various images  in different shot types. for example our front cover will be a long/mid shot.
    • shooting material appropriate to the task set; selecting mise-en-scene including colour, figure,  lighting, objects and setting. -  we will use mise-en-scene appropriate to each image, maintaining the theme of miles kane's appearance.
    • manipulating photographs as appropriate, including cropping and resizing - we will edit our images to create images appropriate to our theme and styling.

    CD cover mock up ONE

Using photoshop and the initial ideas we had about the design of our CD cover, I have created this front cover.  I have used an image taken from the internet which was appropriate to our artist and to the song that we are doing. Because the main features on other Miles Kane disc covers are usually a single person standing alone, and the idea we had was to focus on the girl in the blue dress I have chosen an image of a girl to use.

Since her dress wasn't originally blue, I copied two sets of the same image. I converted one image to black and white, before using the magnet selection tool, to select her skirt. I then used the colour replace option to change her skirt to a very deep blue. I did that to the strap of her top as well. I then reduced the opacity of the layer, and placed it above the other image, still in its original colours. I also put a darken effect on both layers, to draw the colours out further. I also used the blur tool, to lessen the edges on one of the layers, because I had to extend the size of the image, and there was a clear divide.

The text is in two fonts. 'Miles Kane' is in american typewriter, and the 'Quicksand' is in copperplate. I chose these fonts because on the other examples I researched, when looking for other Miles Kane covers, they all had very simplistic and plain fonts.

Email to secondary school for permission- Charlie

I have sent a message to my secondary school to ask them if we can use their main hall to shoot our music video. If they let us film there it would be ideal as they have quite a raised stage and a lengthy hall in which we can film the dancing whilst the band are playing and Chris is singing:

    Permission Email - George

This is the email i have sent to College House Junior School to ask whether we can use their hall as one of our locations for the music video.

Email to school for permission to use their hall- Charlie

Here is an email I sent to my old primary school to ask if we could use their hall for our music video:

    Artist analysis drawing

we were asked in our lesson to draw an artist of our own choice choosing key identifiers to make them easily reconisable to other people. This is my picture of Amy winehouse, you are able to tell as she has behive black hair tatoos a gaunt look to her and a bottle in her hand. many people reconised her instantly because of this as who she is and what she does is easily reconisable to other people because of the media.

if i did draw miles kane i would draw him with long black hair, in a smarty suit with a skinny tie, pale and with a guitar in his hand.

Post artist research section two: CD analysis & CD design

    CD Analysis

The Beatles, HELP! no B-sides EMI records. the only picture on the album is on the front cover, this includes all the band members in blue on a white background

Oasis, (what's the story) morning glory? No B sides sony music label  the cover photos were taken on Berwick street,Soho london which is known for its independent record shops the cover features two men walking art director brian cannon and DJ Sean Rowley

Arctic monkeys, whatever people say I am, thats what Im not (album name not on front or back covers) no B sides. Domino records logo on the back. Friend of the band on the cover, Chris McClure picture caused  criticism as the NHS said that the image was "reinforcing the idea that smoking is okay".

My CD Design for Miles Kane's Colour of the trap album

Music video facebook group for actors, actresses, band members and group members

This is a print screen of our secret facebook group. By doing this we are able to commuinicate with people taking part in our music video.  Me, Charlie, George and Amber are admin members and control who is added to the group were able to ask people about costumes people may already have and organise filming times. we are also able to put music sheets up and lyrics so people in are group are able to learn the lyrics or song for when we are going to film.

Make-up, costume ideas & set design

    Costume
for costume it was decided that the band members would wear black and white the ideal look would be white shirt, black trousers, black tie and black blazer.
This is the image we used as inspiration for this look as it is smart, Miles Kane is clearly influenced by The Beatles as there styling is very similar. Chris is the front man of this band, he to will be wearing black and white but he will have a slight alteration to his costume. We haven't made any decision about what will be different but these are the ideas we have:

    • Chris wears black bow-tie whilst other band members where black tie
    • Chris could wear black waistcoat as well as a blazer
    • Chris could wear a colored tie (maroon, grey, dark blue, indigo etc.)
The decision will be made closer to the time, when we are able to ask other people which one of these actors and group members have and the choice will be made based on what we have collectively.

Sancha is wearing the blue dress we brought for her, the dress cost £25.00 and as a group of 4 we each chipped in  £6.00 to help pay for it, however we only did this for Sanchas dress as her dress is a focal point in our video.

Tom will wear a similar outfit to the boys in the band, however he will wear a dark blue tie to match with Sanchas dress. We will not have to pay for this as tom already has this outfit from his prom.

However all of what we plan may change when we get closer to filming or maybe even on the day we shoot! this may not be completely unavoidable but just incase we will bring spare black ties that we own etc in the hope that this will help if someone does forget something.

    Make-up
For our music video we have asked the boys to wear make up, they all said they would as they wont be wearing anything to noticeable, they will wear powder on there face to get rid of any shine the lights will  cause.

For Sancha we will use red matte lipstick and blue eye-shadow, this combination is commonly used by dancers. this make up will be noticeable when we do close ups on sanchas face.

we will have to keep reapplying make-up throughout the shoot and take a photo of Sancha so we are able to get her make up right every time we start and finish shoots, otherwise this will effect continuity.

    Hair
The boys in our group will be easy to style there hair will be neat but fall naturally so we will have different styles for each member, for example Tims hair is curly and it would look odd if we were to straighten it.
Sancha will have her hair pinned up this is to make sure it wont fall in her eyes and distract her. The hair should look similar to this image however we  realise that it will be hard to get it into such a neat professional style.

like the make-up we will take a photo of Sanchas hair so we will be able to get it relativley similar if we have to re-shoot.

    Other location ideas

After speaking to the people at Attenborough Hall, we were told that the hire cost for the hall would be £19 per hour. Unfortunately due to most of or group not having a job, the cost is too high for us to use the hall especially if we have to re-shoot a couple of times. So there are a couple of other places that are near all of us that we will get in contact with to see what they charge for hiring.

Here are the other location ideas:

Website design- images for CD and Website- Charlie

After doing our idea for our website and CD covers, I looked at the marking criteria to see if I needed to add anything that would ensure that the ideas and texts were at the highest mark possible.

To get the highest marks we needed to make sure that we took high quality pictures whilst filming using a camera that we could use for our CD cover and the website. Here is a list of what images will need to be taken when shooting:

    CD Cover
    - Image of Sancha in her dress looking down at the floor
    - Image of Chris with guitar strapped to his back
    - Image of a stage with the instruments set out with lights highlighting them

Here are some photos for the kind of images we want

    Website
    - Images of his latest album
    - Images of him playing with his band
    - Closes up pictures of him playing and singing into the mic
-Images of the band members playing
-Images of Chris and the band together
-Images of the 'making of the video' with shots of all the actors
